Liquidambar orientalis
12-25€ / 10ml

Styrax, or liquidambar, is one of the oldest sacred resins of humanity. In Antiquity, Phoenician priests burned this amber resin to communicate with the gods, and Egyptians integrated it into their most sophisticated embalming preparations. The species Liquidambar orientalis, endemic to southwestern Turkey, was so precious that entire forests were protected by Ottoman imperial decree. Medieval monks used it as meditation incense.
Styrax is distinguished from other aromatherapy resins by its unique olfactory profile: at once balsamic, amber and subtly floral, often described as 'liquid perfumed honey'. Unlike frankincense (woodier) or myrrh (more bitter), styrax offers incomparable roundness and sweetness. It is particularly prized for meditation and deep relaxation.

Styrax is ideally used in atmospheric diffusion and diluted topical application. Its resinous consistency often requires prior dilution in a slightly warmed carrier oil. In diffusion, it combines wonderfully with other resins (frankincense, myrrh, benzoin) and woods (sandalwood, vetiver). Dilute to 2-5% in a carrier oil for topical use. Perform a preliminary skin test.
Styrax (Liquidambar orientalis or L. styraciflua) produces a balsamic resin used since antiquity. Its scent is warm, amber, vanilla with animal notes. Not to be confused with benzoin (Styrax benzoin), despite the similar name.
Mainly in perfumery and psycho-aromatherapy. Its deep, warm, balsamic scent promotes meditation and relaxation. In blends with frankincense and myrrh for spiritual use. Used in minute amounts.
Can be sensitizing for some individuals. Always patch test. Standard precautions. External use and diffusion only. Its intense scent requires very small doses.
