Styrax tonkinensis

Aromatic resin harvested by incision of the styrax bark in Laos and Indonesia. Used for millennia in Southeast Asia as medicine, perfume and offering in Buddhist temples. The name comes from the Arabic luban jawi (Java incense). Introduced to Europe by Arab merchants in the Middle Ages, it became a key ingredient in pharmacy -- the Baume du Commandeur contains benzoin.
Distinguished from other resins by its richness in benzoic acid and vanillin, with a warm, sweet, almost gourmet scent. The softest of all balms, without earthy notes (myrrh) or citrusy ones (frankincense). Forms a protective healing film on the skin. Note: it is not a true essential oil but a dissolved resin.

Benzoin is a balsamic resin from the Styrax tree (Styrax benzoin, Sumatra or Styrax tonkinensis, Vietnam/Laos). The 'essential oil' is actually a resinoid dissolved in a solvent or an absolute. Its warm, vanilla, balsamic scent is distinctive.
It is a traditional healing agent for cracked and chapped skin, chilblains and minor wounds. In dilution in carrier oil, it promotes healing and soothes irritation. Also used in lip balms and healing creams.
Its warm, enveloping, slightly vanilla scent has a documented comforting and reassuring effect. In diffusion, it creates a cozy atmosphere. Often used in blends for insomnia, anxiety and sadness.
