Boswellia carterii
10-25€ / 10ml

Frankincense (olibanum) is the resin of the Boswellia tree, which grows in arid regions of the Horn of Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula. Its trade is one of the oldest in the world -- the Incense Route connected Yemen to the Mediterranean 3000 years ago. Egyptians used it extensively for embalming and religious rituals. In the Bible, it is one of the three gifts of the Magi to Jesus. Today, frankincense is still burned in Christian churches, mosques and Buddhist temples.
Frankincense is one of the rare essential oils containing incensole, a molecule studied for its effects on the central nervous system. In psycho-emotional aromatherapy, frankincense is considered the essential oil of meditation and spiritual connection. It is also a gentle immunostimulant and an excellent skin healer, used in high-end anti-aging care.

Frankincense is a long-term essential oil -- used over time rather than in emergencies. In diffusion, it creates an atmosphere conducive to meditation and inner calm. In skincare diluted to 1-2%, it helps regenerate mature skin and reduce scars. In chest massage, it gently supports immunity. Its price is high but a few drops are enough for each use.
This is the oldest use of frankincense, practiced for millennia in all spiritual traditions. Incensole and incensyl acetate cross the blood-brain barrier and activate TRPV3 pathways linked to feelings of calm. In diffusion, 3-4 drops are sufficient.
In vitro studies show that boswellic acids (present in the resin, less so in the essential oil) have anti-tumor properties. However, no clinical study validates the use of frankincense essential oil as a cancer treatment. It in no way replaces medical treatment.
Oman frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is generally finer and more expensive, with more lemony notes. Somalia frankincense (Boswellia carterii) is more earthy and woody. Both are quality options for aromatherapy. Always check the Latin name on the label.
