Commiphora myrrha
15-35€ / 10ml

Myrrh is a gum-resin produced by a thorny tree of the genus Commiphora, which grows in arid zones of the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Like frankincense, it is one of the Magi's gifts. Egyptians used it for embalming (the word 'myrrh' comes from the Arabic 'murr', meaning 'bitter'). In ancient Greek medicine, soldiers carried myrrh on campaign to disinfect and heal wounds. Hippocrates and Dioscorides prescribed it for oral infections.
Myrrh contains furanosesquiterpenes, a rare family of molecules in the world of essential oils. These molecules give it specific anti-inflammatory and healing properties, different from those of classic monoterpenes or sesquiterpenes. Myrrh is particularly indicated for mouth and throat problems (mouth ulcers, gingivitis, pharyngitis).
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Traditional use
Myrrh is mainly used for mouth conditions (in diluted local application) and for wound and crack healing. In massage, it is often combined with frankincense for anti-aging care. Its texture is thick and viscous, making it hard to dose with a dropper. In diffusion, its warm, earthy, balsamic scent blends well with frankincense.
Yes, this is one of its oldest traditional uses. The furanosesquiterpenoids in myrrh accelerate skin regeneration. Apply 1-2 drops in rosehip carrier oil on scars, chapped or cracked skin. Also used as a mouthwash for inflamed gums.
Yes, but its scent is very intense and earthy -- not everyone appreciates it. Blended with frankincense and sandalwood, it creates a deep meditative atmosphere. 1-2 drops are enough in a blend.
Yes, strictly. Myrrh is emmenagogue (stimulates menstruation) and potentially abortifacient. It is contraindicated throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
