Commiphora guidottii
12-28€ / 10ml

Opoponax, fondly nicknamed 'sweet myrrh', is a resin that exhales the fragrances of the arid lands of the Horn of Africa. From Commiphora guidottii, a gnarled but tenacious tree of the Somali and Ethiopian deserts, it is the discreet and benevolent cousin of bitter myrrh. Somali nomadic peoples have harvested its resin for millennia. In Antiquity, Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder already distinguished it from common myrrh for its superior calming virtues.
Opoponax is distinguished from classic myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) by incomparable olfactory sweetness and roundness. Where myrrh is bitter, dry and medicinal, opoponax is warm, honeyed and slightly sweet, with nuances of plum and caramel. It is a resin of gentle contemplation, perfect for those who find myrrh too austere or too bitter.

Opoponax is one of the easiest resins to use in aromatherapy thanks to its gentleness. In diffusion, it offers a warm and enveloping atmosphere, ideal for winter evenings or meditation moments. Topically, dilute to 3-5% in a carrier oil. An excellent choice for beginners who wish to explore the world of resins without the intensity of myrrh or the precautions of Peru balsam.

Opoponax (Commiphora guidottii) is a relative of myrrh, from Somalia and Ethiopia. Its essential oil has a warm, sweet, slightly fruity scent, softer than myrrh. Also called 'sweet myrrh'. Used in perfumery and meditation.
Same family (Commiphora) but different species and scent. Opoponax is sweeter and less bitter than myrrh. Similar anti-inflammatory and healing properties but less documented. It is myrrh's softer cousin.
Little documented toxicologically. Standard precautions (pregnancy, children). Well tolerated in the usual dilutions. Its sweet scent makes it pleasant in diffusion.
