Labdanum is the gum-resin of cistus (Cistus ladanifer), historically harvested by combing goat beards in the Mediterranean maquis. It was one of the first aromatic substances used by humans. In perfumery, labdanum absolute is an essential amber note. Not to be confused with cistus essential oil (distilled from leaves), though they come from the same plant.
As a resin, labdanum offers a different profile from cistus essential oil: warmer, more balsamic, more amber. Used primarily in perfumery as a base note. Its therapeutic properties are secondary to its olfactory interest.

Labdanum is primarily a perfumery ingredient rather than a therapeutic essential oil. Thick and resinous, it requires warming before use. In diffusion, it adds a warm amber note. Dilute heavily for any skin application.
