Polianthes tuberosa
50-120€ / 10ml

Tuberose, native to Mexico, was discovered by the Aztecs who named it 'omixochitl', the bone flower. Introduced to Europe in the 17th century, it became the obsession of Grasse perfumers. Louis XIV had thousands planted in the gardens of Versailles, to the point that some court ladies fainted, so heady was its trail. In India, it adorns the hair of brides. Its English nickname 'Mistress of the Night' evokes its peculiarity: its flowers exhale a more intense fragrance after sunset.
Tuberose is distinguished by its unparalleled olfactory power: a single drop can perfume a room for hours. Where jasmine is solar and ylang tropical, tuberose is nocturnal, creamy and almost milky. Its profile rich in methyl benzoate gives it a waxy and enveloping facet unique to it. In emotional aromatherapy, it is reputed to release emotional blockages and revive sensuality.

No, tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) produces an absolute (solvent extraction), not an essential oil. The flowers are too delicate for steam distillation. One of the most expensive absolutes in perfumery.
Mainly in olfactotherapy and luxury blends. Its scent is so intense that it must be highly diluted. Known for its calming and mood-enhancing effects. Very expensive: for use in minute doses only.
