Citrus aurantium (feuilles)

Petitgrain bigarade is distilled from the leaves of the bitter orange tree, the same tree that produces neroli (from flowers) and bitter orange essence (from peel). Its name comes from the historical distillation of the small green fruits of the tree. Paraguay is the world's leading producer, where plantations extend over thousands of hectares. In perfumery, it has been a pillar of Eau de Cologne since the 18th century.
Petitgrain shares with lavender a biochemical profile dominated by linalool and linalyl acetate, but with woody and green notes instead of floral ones. It is a 'masculine' alternative to lavender for the same uses (relaxation, sleep). Its very affordable price makes it one of the best value options for stress management.

It is one of the best nervous system regulators. Rich in linalyl acetate and linalool, it gently calms the nervous system. Apply 2 drops on the solar plexus or diffuse 20 minutes before bedtime. Gentler and more affordable than neroli.
Both come from the same tree (bitter orange) but from different parts: petitgrain from the leaves and twigs, neroli from the flowers. Neroli is more precious and refined, petitgrain more accessible (5-12 EUR vs 40-120 EUR). Therapeutically similar for relaxation.
Yes, it is one of the gentlest and best-tolerated essential oils. Usable from age 3 in diluted topical application and in diffusion. Ideal for anxious children or those who have trouble falling asleep, often combined with lavender or mandarin.
