Levisticum officinale
15-30€ / 10ml

Lovage (Levisticum officinale), nicknamed 'perpetual celery' or 'mountain celery', is a large perennial plant cultivated in European gardens since the Middle Ages. Benedictine monks cultivated it in their herb gardens for its digestive and hepatic virtues. Hildegard of Bingen prescribed it for liver diseases in the 12th century. In cooking, it replaces celery with a more intense flavor. Its essential oil, distilled from the roots, contains phthalides -- the same detoxifying molecules found in celery.
Lovage is one of the essential oils richest in phthalides (ligustilide, butylidene-phthalide) -- molecules with powerful hepatic and renal detoxifying properties. Its draining action is more pronounced than celery's. It is the essential oil of the 'big detox' in aromatherapy, often combined with Greenland ledon and wild carrot in spring liver cure protocols. Caution: PHOTOSENSITIZING.

Traditional use
Lovage is used in 3-week courses for the liver and kidneys, in synergy with other hepatic essential oils. Diluted skin application only in the evening (photosensitizing). No sun exposure within 12 hours of application. Time-limited courses, with a break between courses. It is a 'deep cleansing' essential oil, not for daily use.
Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is distilled from the roots. Rich in phthalides (like celery), it is an excellent liver detoxifier. It is also depigmenting (dark spots). Strong, earthy, celery-like scent.
Excellent liver drainer. Phthalides stimulate the elimination of toxins by the liver. 1 drop in honey in the morning, 10-day course. Similar to celery but more powerful. Ideal for seasonal detox.
Yes, very much so. Furocoumarins cause irreversible brown spots with sun exposure. Apply ONLY in the evening. Paradoxically, it lightens existing dark spots. This dual action makes it useful for spots but only with strict sun avoidance.
