Chamaecyparis obtusa

Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is Japan's sacred cypress. For over a thousand years, it has been used to build Shinto temples and imperial palaces -- the Ise temple is entirely rebuilt in hinoki every 20 years. The wood is also used for traditional bathtubs (ofuro). Its woody and gentle scent is considered in Japan as the essence of serenity.
Unique olfactory profile combining woody, citrusy and almost milky notes. Contains sabinene, elemol and terpinen-4-ol in proportions found in no other conifer. Deeply soothing unlike European cypress (dry and stimulating). Japanese studies show that hinoki reduces cortisol -- this is the foundation of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing).
