Sea fennel grows wild on cliffs and rocks battered by sea spray, from Brittany to the Mediterranean. Medieval sailors harvested it to prevent scurvy. Shakespeare mentions it in King Lear. In Brittany, it is called rock samphire. The essential oil is attracting growing interest for its remarkable cosmetic properties.
