Myroxylon pereirae

The history of Peru balsam is one of a geographical misunderstanding turned legend. Despite its name, this golden resin does not come from Peru but from the tropical forests of Central America, mainly El Salvador. It was the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century who, shipping all New World riches via the port of Callao in Peru, gave this misleading name. Indigenous peoples had used it for centuries to heal war wounds and snake bites. Jesuit missionaries introduced it into European pharmacopoeias from the 17th century.
Peru balsam is radically distinguished from other resins by its status as a major allergen. Where benzoin or frankincense are generally well tolerated, Peru balsam causes reactions in 5 to 10% of the dermatologically tested population. Its composition rich in cinnamates and benzoates gives it exceptional healing power, but it is precisely this chemical richness that makes it a sensitizer.

Using Peru balsam requires a methodical and cautious approach. ALWAYS perform a 48h allergy test before first use by applying a drop diluted to 1% in the elbow crease. In case of redness, itching or swelling, NEVER use this product. If the test is negative, use exclusively diluted to 1-3% in a carrier oil. Never diffuse. Never apply on face or mucous membranes. Reserve for occasional topical uses: cracks, small superficial wounds, chapping. Stop immediately in case of reaction.
Non recommandé en diffusion. Privilégier l'application cutanée diluée ou l'inhalation contrôlée.
Diluer dans une huile végétale avant application. Respecter les dosages recommandés selon la zone et le public.

Peru balsam (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae) is a resin from Central America (not Peru despite the name). Rich in benzyl benzoate and cinnamate, it is a warm, vanilla, cinnamon-scented balsam. Allergenic potential.
Yes, it is one of the most common fragrance allergens. Routinely tested in contact allergy patch tests. People allergic to Peru balsam must also avoid cinnamon, vanilla and many perfumed cosmetics. Always patch test.
Traditionally used for poorly healing wounds and scabies (benzyl benzoate is an anti-parasitic). But its high allergenic potential limits its use. Prefer other healing essential oils unless specifically indicated.
