Myroxylon balsamum
10-22€ / 10ml

Tolu balsam takes its name from the town of Santiago de Tolu in Colombia, from where the first cargoes departed for Europe in the 16th century. Unlike its cousin Peru balsam, this one bears a geographically accurate name. The Zenu Indians of the Colombian coast had used this resin since time immemorial to treat lung ailments and infected wounds. European apothecaries adopted it rapidly, integrating it into numerous pectoral preparations and cough syrups.
Tolu balsam is distinguished from Peru balsam by a notably superior tolerance profile and a drier, more friable texture at room temperature. Its allergenic potential, while real, is considerably lesser. In aromatherapy, it is mainly valued for its gentle expectorant properties, making it a winter ally. Its balsamic vanilla fragrance is subtler and fresher than Peru balsam's.

Tolu balsam is mainly used by respiratory route (dry or humid inhalation) and diluted topical application. Its semi-solid consistency often requires slight warming of the bottle between the hands, or prior dissolution in a warm carrier oil. In diffusion, it brings a warm, vanilla base note that pairs wonderfully with citrus and resins. Dilute to 3-5% for topical applications. Although less allergenic than Peru balsam, a preliminary skin test is still recommended.

Tolu balsam (Myroxylon balsamum var. balsamum) is the 'gentler cousin' of Peru balsam, from Colombia. Less allergenic, softer scent (vanilla, caramel). Used in perfumery and pharmaceutical preparations as a fixative.
Same species, different variety. Tolu is less allergenic and softer. Peru is more intense and more sensitizing. For aromatherapy, Tolu is generally preferred for its better tolerance. Both have warm, vanilla-balsamic scents.
Better tolerated than Peru balsam but the allergenic potential remains. Always patch test. Standard precautions. Its warm, comforting scent is pleasant in diffusion.
