Schinus molle
10-22€ / 10ml

Pink peppercorns (Schinus molle), also called 'false pepper' or 'pink pepper', are not true pepper -- they come from a South American tree of the Anacardiaceae family (the same family as mango and cashew nuts). The Incas used the berries and leaves as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. The tree was planted throughout the Mediterranean basin, Africa and Reunion Island as an ornamental tree. In cooking, pink peppercorns became a trendy ingredient of French gastronomy in the 1980s.
Pink peppercorn essential oil has an original profile dominated by alpha-phellandrene and myrcene, with elemol -- a sesquiterpenol with gentle anti-inflammatory properties. It is an essential oil at the crossroads of black pepper (tonic, warming) and frankincense (anti-inflammatory, meditative). Its scent is woody, peppery and slightly resinous -- very appreciated in natural perfumery as a spicy heart note.

Traditional use
Pink peppercorns are used in diffusion (tonic, fragrant), massage (mild anti-inflammatory, toning) and natural perfumery. It is a gentle and well-tolerated essential oil, suited to blends. Caution for people allergic to Anacardiaceae (cashew nuts, mango, pistachio) -- there is a risk of cross-allergy. In aromatic cooking, 1 drop in a vinaigrette or dish adds a refined peppery touch.
