Piper nigrum
8-15€ / 10ml

Black pepper is the most traded spice in the world since Antiquity. Romans paid their taxes in pepper, and Alaric the Visigoth demanded 3000 pounds of pepper as ransom for Rome in 410. The word 'to pepper' became synonymous with 'to make expensive'. Native to Kerala (India), pepper is now cultivated in Vietnam (leading producer), India and Madagascar. Black pepper essential oil is distilled from dried berries and has a warm, spicy and woody scent.
Black pepper essential oil is rich in beta-caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene that is also an agonist of the cannabinoid receptor CB2. This interaction with the endocannabinoid system could explain its analgesic and anti-inflammatory action. It is also a 'warming' essential oil that activates local circulation, useful for 'cold' muscle and joint pain.
