Rosa damascena
80-200€ / 10ml

Damascus rose is considered the 'queen of flowers' and its essential oil the most precious in the world. Native to Persia (Iran), it has been cultivated for over 2500 years. Bulgaria (Rose Valley of Kazanlak) and Turkey (Isparta) are the main producers. It takes 4 to 5 tons of petals -- harvested by hand at dawn -- to produce 1 kg of essential oil. This is why its price reaches 80-200 EUR for 10 ml. Cleopatra reportedly filled the floor of her chamber with rose petals to seduce Marc Antony.
Rose essential oil contains over 400 identified molecules -- it is one of the most complex in the plant kingdom. Citronellol and geraniol dominate, but traces of damascenones and rose-oxides (present at less than 1%) are responsible for the characteristic rose scent. In aromatherapy, rose is the essential oil of the heart -- used for grief, mourning, emotional sorrow. It is also a powerful uterine tonic.
