Petroselinum crispum

Parsley is so omnipresent in our kitchens that we forget its essential oil is one of the most dangerous. Greeks consecrated it to the dead. In the Middle Ages, midwives used it as an abortifacient -- a practice that caused many deaths. Apiol, extracted from the seeds, was commercialized in the 19th century before being banned for hepatic and renal toxicity. Today, parsley essential oil remains reserved for professionals.
Parsley essential oil demonstrates that a common food plant can produce a formidable oil. Its richness in apiol and myristicin classifies it among neurotoxic and abortifacient oils. Unlike rosemary verbenone or lemon which detoxify safely, parsley presents an unfavorable benefit-risk ratio for domestic use. There is almost always a safer alternative.

In the vast majority of cases, parsley essential oil has no place in your family kit. Its neurotoxic and abortifacient potential makes it a strictly professional product. For liver detox, prefer rosemary verbenone. For digestive effect, tropical basil or lemon. If prescribed by a professional, never more than 1 drop per dose, 2 doses/day, 5 days max. Never in pregnant women.
Depends on the part distilled. The leaf oil is richer in myristicin (mildly toxic). The seed oil is richer in apiol (strongly abortifacient). Both are contraindicated in pregnancy. For adults only, in short courses. Not a beginner's essential oil.
Liver and kidney detox (diuretic, draining). Also used for irregular periods (emmenagogue) and dark spots (depigmenting). 1 drop in honey in the morning, 7-day course. Strictly for adult use.
Yes, it contains photosensitizing furocoumarins. No sun exposure after skin application. Apply only in the evening on dark spots. In diffusion, no risk.
