Michelia alba
25-60€ / 10ml

White magnolia (Michelia alba, also classified Magnolia x alba) is the most fragrant magnolia in Asia. In China, its white flowers symbolize purity and spring renewal. In Shanghai, it is the city's emblematic tree. In Buddhist temples, magnolia flowers are offered as a sign of devotion. The essential oil is distilled from fresh flowers -- considerable quantities are needed, which explains its high price.
White magnolia is dominated by linalool (60-80%), which brings it biochemically close to true lavender and Ho wood. But its olfactory profile is radically different: floral, bewitching, almost hypnotic, with green and creamy notes. It is a powerful relaxant, reputed for its action on deep stress and insomnia. In natural perfumery, it is a heart note of rare elegance, often compared to neroli but more accessible.

Traditional use
White magnolia is used in olfaction (opening the bottle and breathing), diffusion and luxury skincare. Its high price (25-60 EUR/10ml) reserves it for drop-by-drop use. It is the essential oil of 'letting go' -- when lavender is not deep enough, magnolia takes you further. In facial care, it brings the same benefits as lavender (regenerating, soothing) with an incomparably more sophisticated scent.

Yes, it is one of the best floral relaxants. Its high linalool content (60-80%) gives it sedative properties comparable to lavender, with a much more sophisticated fragrance. Apply 2 drops on the pillow or diffuse 20 minutes before bed.
The distillation yield is low and the flowers are fragile. Production is mainly Chinese. Expect 25-50 EUR per 5ml. A luxurious alternative to lavender for relaxation, with an exquisite floral scent.
Very well tolerated thanks to its high linalool content (same safety profile as ho wood or lavender). Standard precautions (pregnancy, young children). Its gentle, floral scent is universally appreciated.
