Jasminum grandiflorum
50-150€ / 10ml

Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) is native to the Himalayas and cultivated for millennia in India, Egypt and Morocco. In India, it is the 'flower of the night' because it opens at dusk and releases its most intense fragrance at night. In Grasse (France), the world capital of perfume, jasmine is harvested at dawn, before the sun evaporates the aromatic molecules. It takes 8 million flowers to produce 1 kg of jasmine absolute -- which is why it is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery.
Jasmine is not an essential oil in the strict sense but an 'absolute', obtained by solvent extraction (hexane). This process is necessary because the delicate jasmine flowers cannot withstand the heat of steam distillation. The absolute contains residual traces of solvent, making it less 'pure' than an essential oil. Despite this, it is used in aromatherapy for its antidepressant and aphrodisiac properties.

Jasmine is mainly used in olfaction (opening the bottle and breathing) for its effects on mood and emotions. In skincare, it is added at 1 drop in 30 ml carrier oil. Its extreme price (50-150 EUR/10ml) reserves it for drop-by-drop use. In natural perfumery, it is an essential heart note.
It takes about 7 million flowers (picked by hand at night, when the scent is most intense) to obtain 1 liter of absolute. The essential oil does not exist strictly speaking -- jasmine is too fragile for steam distillation. It is an absolute obtained by solvent extraction.
That has been its reputation for centuries in India, Arabia and China. Its rich, warm, slightly animal scent acts on the limbic system (emotional brain). In massage diluted to 1-2% or in diffusion, it creates a sensual atmosphere.
Both -- it is a paradoxical essential oil. It calms anxiety and depression while boosting self-confidence. This makes it particularly useful for performance anxiety, stage fright and emotional situations.
