Humulus lupulus
12-28€ / 10ml

Hops spontaneously evoke beer, and this is no coincidence: this vigorous vine of the Cannabaceae family has been cultivated for over a thousand years to flavor and preserve ale. But long before its marriage with malt, hops was a respected medicinal plant. Hildegard of Bingen recommended it in the 12th century for its calming virtues. Hop pickers in English and Alsatian hop fields empirically observed that women who worked among hop cones often had their periods triggered prematurely -- an early clue to its estrogenic activity.
Hops is distinguished from other sedative essential oils by its dual calming and estrogen-like action. Where lavender or chamomile calm the nervous system without hormonal action, hops acts on both fronts simultaneously. The molecule responsible for estrogenic activity is 8-prenylnaringenin, considered one of the most powerful phyto-estrogens in the plant kingdom. This potency imposes an absolute contraindication in hormone-dependent cancer.

Hops is mainly used in light diffusion (small quantities, short duration) and diluted topical application at 2-5%. For sleep, apply 30 minutes before bedtime on solar plexus and wrists. For menopausal problems, prior medical consultation is INDISPENSABLE to exclude hormone-dependent cancer. Do not use long-term without follow-up. Hops potentiates sedatives: do not drive after use.
Very sedative. 2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol (formed from humulones) has documented sleep-promoting effects. Used for severe insomnia and nervous agitation. 1-2 drops on the pillow. Strong, herbaceous, bitter scent.
Same plant (Humulus lupulus) but the essential oil contains concentrated volatile compounds, not the bitter acids of beer. The essential oil does not taste like beer. Its scent is more herbaceous and musky.
Yes, hops contain phytoestrogens (8-prenylnaringenin is one of the most potent known). Contraindicated in cases of hormone-dependent cancer. Also avoid during pregnancy. Its estrogen-like action explains its use for menopausal hot flashes.
