Curcuma longa
8-15€ / 10ml

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is nicknamed 'the gold of India' -- it is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. Used for 4000 years in Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is considered a universal anti-inflammatory in India. Turmeric essential oil is obtained by distilling the rhizome and has a biochemical profile different from turmeric powder or purified curcumin. Turmerones (ar-turmerone, alpha-turmerone) are its key molecules.
Turmeric essential oil is rich in turmerones, sesquiterpene ketones different from curcumin (the active polyphenol in the powder). Turmerones have their own anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The essential oil is complementary to oral curcumin -- it does not replace it but acts through other pathways. It is also a powerful yellow stain -- be careful with clothing and skin.

Traditional use
Turmeric essential oil is used in massage for joint pain and digestive care. Diluted to 3-5% in a carrier oil, it helps calm local inflammation. Its use in skincare is possible but be careful: it temporarily stains the skin yellow. In diffusion, its warm and spicy scent is pleasant but powerful.

No. The essential oil is obtained by distilling the rhizome and contains sesquiterpenes (turmerones). The powder contains curcumin (curcuminoids), which is absent from the essential oil. Both have anti-inflammatory properties but through different mechanisms.
Yes, it can leave a yellow tint on the skin due to ar-turmerone. This fades after a few hours. Use it preferably in the evening or diluted in carrier oil. It also stains fabrics.
