Pimpinella anisum
5-10€ / 10ml

Cultivated since Egyptian Antiquity -- found in pharaonic tombs. Romans chewed it after banquets. At the origin of French anise-flavored drinks -- absinthe, pastis, anisette. One of the oldest simples in herbalism. Cultivated in Egypt, Turkey and Spain.
Distinguished from star anise (badiane) by botanical origin but same dominant molecule: trans-anethole. Green anise is finer and more herbaceous, star anise is more powerful and licorice-like. Both are estrogenic and not recommended in cases of hormone-dependent cancer.
