Turpentine is the essence distilled from the resin of various pines, mainly maritime pine. It is one of humanity's oldest remedies -- the Greeks and Romans used it to disinfect wounds and as a chest rub. In France, turpentine was a pillar of the Landes economy until the mid-20th century. The 'gemmeurs' (resin tappers) collected pine resin in earthenware pots. Not to be confused with industrial turpentine (chemical solvent).
Therapeutic turpentine is 70-90% alpha-pinene, a powerful respiratory antiseptic monoterpene. It is more concentrated than most conifer essential oils. Its action on the respiratory tract is fast and powerful. However, it is also irritating and nephrotoxic at high doses.
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Traditionally used for respiratory conditions and muscle pain. Alpha-pinene is a good expectorant. In chest rub at 5-10% or inhalation. Also used in Scandinavian tradition for winter ailments.
