Mentha spicata
5-10€ / 10ml

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the mint of Moroccan mint tea and mojito. Its scent is softer and sweeter than peppermint. Native to the Mediterranean basin, it has been cultivated since Antiquity -- Romans used it to scent sauces and baths.
Spearmint contains carvone (50-70%) instead of the menthol in peppermint. Carvone is a gentler ketone than menthol, making spearmint less powerful but better tolerated. It is mucolytic (thins secretions) but also neurotoxic at high doses (like all ketones).
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Yes, it is the 'children's mint'. Unlike peppermint (menthol, dangerous before age 6), spearmint contains carvone which is non-toxic for children. From age 3, it can be used diluted for digestive issues. A good family choice.
Yes, the typical chewing gum flavor is spearmint (carvone). Peppermint has a colder, more intense taste (menthol). In cooking, 1 drop of spearmint essential oil adds a fresh note to drinks, desserts and salads.
