Melissa officinalis
50-150€ / 10ml

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is nicknamed 'the elixir of long life' -- the Carmelites created the Eau de Melisse des Carmes in 1611, a remedy still sold 400 years later. Paracelsus called it 'the elixir of life'. Its Greek name 'melissa' means bee, because its flowers attract bees. Lemon balm essential oil is one of the most expensive in the world (50-150 EUR/10ml) because its distillation yield is even lower than verbena: about 0.02-0.05% (it takes 7 to 10 tons of plant for 1 liter of essential oil).
Lemon balm is the most powerful calming essential oil in the aromatic pharmacopoeia. It surpasses lavender and petitgrain in sedative potency. Its antiviral activity against herpes simplex has been documented in several in vitro studies. It is also the most adulterated essential oil: up to 90% of 'melissa' on the market is reportedly blends of citronella and litsea.
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Lemon balm is used drop by drop given its price. Its main use is cold sores (locally neat on the blister) and anxiety attacks (olfaction). For insomnia, it surpasses all other calming essential oils. Never buy melissa at a 'normal' price -- it is probably adulterated. Demand the chromatographic analysis report.

Les huiles essentielles suivantes se combinent particuli\u00e8rement bien avec mélisse officinale pour renforcer ou compl\u00e9ter ses effets :
Yes, it is one of the most studied essential oils for herpes simplex. Citrals directly inhibit viral replication. Apply 1 drop at the very first tingling. Very effective at the prodromal stage, less so once the blister has formed. Combine with niaouli for maximum effectiveness.
Its distillation yield is catastrophic: 0.02-0.05% (7 to 10 tons of plant for 1 liter of essential oil). This makes it one of the rarest essential oils. Expect 50-150 EUR per 10ml. Beware of adulterated oils (lemongrass, litsea cubeba added).
Exceptionally. It is one of the finest nervous system sedatives: anxiety, insomnia, nervous agitation, depression. The citrals and sesquiterpenes act synergistically. 1 drop on the wrists or solar plexus for an immediate calming effect.
