Origanum majorana
8-15€ / 10ml

Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) should not be confused with oregano (Origanum compactum), although both are of the same genus. Greeks called it 'amarakos' and considered it a symbol of happiness -- wreaths were made for newlyweds. Aphrodite, goddess of love, supposedly created it to perfume the mountains. In traditional medicine, it was prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders. Native to the Mediterranean basin, it is now cultivated in Egypt and France.
Sweet marjoram is the reference essential oil for the autonomic nervous system. Rich in terpinen-4-ol, it has a parasympathomimetic action -- it activates the parasympathetic system (relaxation) and restrains the sympathetic system (stress). This is why it is so effective against palpitations, nervous hypertension and stress-related spasms.

Marjoram is used in massage (solar plexus, chest, neck) diluted to 5-10% in a carrier oil to calm the nervous system. In diffusion, it creates a soothing atmosphere conducive to sleep. It is a 'long-term' essential oil taken in 2-3 week courses rather than occasional use. Well tolerated, it suits sensitive individuals.
Sweet marjoram is an excellent parasympathomimetic: it rebalances the nervous system toward calm. It lowers heart rate, relaxes muscles and calms the mind. 2-3 drops diluted on the solar plexus in the evening for chronic stress.
Despite their botanical similarity, they are very different in aromatherapy. Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is gentle, relaxing and well tolerated. Oregano (Origanum compactum) is aggressive, anti-infectious and dermocaustic. Not interchangeable.
Traditionally considered an anaphrodisiac (reduces desire). In the Middle Ages, it was placed in monasteries to calm the monks. In practice, its relaxing effect can promote letting go, which paradoxically supports intimacy for stressed people.
