Litsea cubeba
5-10€ / 10ml

Litsea cubeba is a small tree of the laurel family, native to China and Vietnam. Its small fruits (berries) resemble peppercorns and release an intense lemon scent when crushed. In traditional Chinese medicine, litsea is used for digestive disorders and joint pain. It is also a natural source of citral used by the chemical industry to synthesize vitamins (vitamin A) and fragrances.
Litsea cubeba contains 70-80% citral, making it very similar to lemongrass in composition. However, its scent is finer and fruitier -- often described as 'lemon-tropical'. It is sometimes presented as an alternative to lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora) with which it shares certain calming properties, at a price 5-10 times lower.
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Yes, its scent of lemon and verbena has a documented calming effect. The citrals (neral + geranial) act on the nervous system similarly to lemon verbena but at a much lower cost. In diffusion, it creates a serene and luminous atmosphere.
Olfactorily very close, and 10 to 20 times cheaper. For diffusion and relaxation, it is an excellent substitute. For dermal anti-inflammatory use, true verbena remains superior. Litsea can be more irritating to the skin (citrals).
In low dilution (1-2%), it is interesting for oily and acne-prone skin thanks to its antibacterial and sebum-regulating properties. But caution: citrals are irritating -- never exceed 2% on the skin and always do a patch test.
