Khella (Ammi visnaga) is a plant of the Apiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin. In ancient Egypt, it was used to treat renal colic. Khellin, one of its active ingredients, inspired the development of sodium cromoglycate, an anti-asthmatic medication. It is a rare example of a plant whose study directly led to the creation of a synthetic drug.
Khella is the most powerful essential oil for bronchial spasms (asthma). It is also a coronary dilator -- it dilates the coronary arteries. But it is PHOTOSENSITIZING and hepatotoxic, which reserves it for expert use.
