Cymbopogon winterianus
3-7€ / 10ml

Java citronella is a tropical grass cultivated in Indonesia, Vietnam and China. It should not be confused with Ceylon citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) or lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), although all three are 'citronellas'. Java citronella is the richest in citronellal, making it the best natural mosquito repellent of the three. Citronella candles generally use this species. In Southeast Asia, fresh leaves are also used in cooking.
Java citronella contains 35-45% citronellal and 20-25% geraniol, a profile that makes it superior to other citronellas as an insect repellent. The World Health Organization recognizes citronellal as an effective mosquito repellent. It is also a good anti-inflammatory, but less potent than lemon eucalyptus for this use.

It is the traditional mosquito repellent. Citronellal, geraniol and citronellol repel most flying insects. In diffusion or diluted on the skin, the protection lasts 1-3 hours. Less effective than lemon eucalyptus but pleasant scent. Reapply regularly.
Java (Cymbopogon winterianus) contains more citronellal and geraniol -- it is more effective as a repellent and anti-inflammatory. Ceylon (Cymbopogon nardus) is richer in geraniol and has a softer scent. For mosquito repellent, prefer Java.
Yes, citronellal has anti-inflammatory properties useful for joint and muscle pain. Diluted to 5-10% in massage, it relieves tendinitis, arthritis and soreness. Combine with lemon eucalyptus for a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect.
