Matricaria chamomilla
20-45€ / 10ml

German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or recutita) is also called matricaria -- from the Latin 'matrix' (uterus) because it was used for gynecological disorders. Not to be confused with Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), which is a different species. German chamomile essential oil is characterized by its intense dark blue color, due to chamazulene which forms during distillation. Egyptians consecrated it to the god Ra because of the sun-like shape of its flowers.
Chamazulene gives German chamomile a skin anti-inflammatory power superior to Roman chamomile. It is the essential oil of choice for inflammatory skin conditions: eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pruritus. Bisabolol, its other key molecule, is a powerful skin healer. Roman chamomile is more oriented toward the 'nervous system', while matricaria is more oriented toward 'skin'.

German chamomile is the first-choice essential oil for skin inflammation. Diluted to 2-5% in a calendula or borage carrier oil, it soothes itching, reduces inflammation and accelerates healing. Its blue color stains the skin -- this is normal and washes off. It is well tolerated and can be used in babies from 3 months in very low dilution (0.5%).
The blue color comes from chamazulene, which is produced during distillation (it does not exist in the fresh plant). This molecule is a powerful anti-inflammatory. The deeper the blue, the richer in chamazulene. German chamomile stains skin and fabrics blue.
It is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories for the skin. Chamazulene and alpha-bisabolol soothe eczema, allergies, irritation and redness. In dilution (1-3%), it calms even very sensitive and reactive skin.
German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is anti-inflammatory (chamazulene) -- specialized for skin and allergies. Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is calming (esters) -- specialized for stress and the nervous system. Different indications despite their shared name.
