Thuja occidentalis
8-18€ / 10ml

Western red cedar, also called 'tree of life', was the first Canadian medicinal plant imported to Europe. In 1535, during Jacques Cartier's expedition to Canada, the crew suffered from scurvy. The Iroquois prepared a decoction of bark and needles that cured them. In homeopathy, Thuja is one of the great constitutional remedies, prescribed notably for warts. But the concentrated essential oil is another matter entirely: its richness in thujone (40-65%) makes it one of the most neurotoxic essential oils.
Thuja is the quintessence of ambivalence in aromatherapy: extremely effective against warts (its reference indication) but extremely dangerous if misused. The thujone it contains is the same molecule that made absinthe dangerous. Its use is strictly limited to local application on warts, in minimal doses and short duration.
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

DANGER: thuja is NEUROTOXIC (thujone) and reserved for professionals. Its only justified indication for the general public would be warts, but safe alternatives exist (tea tree, lemon, cinnamon). If used professionally: strictly local, strictly on the wart, maximum 7 days. NEVER in diffusion, NEVER orally, NEVER on children or pregnant women.
Yes, very dangerous. Rich in alpha-thujone (up to 65%), which is highly neurotoxic and abortifacient. Seizures are possible even at moderate doses. One of the most dangerous essential oils. NEVER use without professional supervision.
Thuja is traditionally reputed for removing warts. 1 drop applied strictly on the wart (protecting surrounding skin) for several weeks. But the neurotoxicity risk makes this use questionable. Tea tree or thymol thyme are safer alternatives.
In homeopathy, thuja is widely used (at infinitesimal dilutions, hence without toxicity). In aromatherapy, its use is strictly reserved for professionals for very specific indications. For home use, many safer alternatives exist.
