Thymus mastichina
6-14€ / 10ml

Wild marjoram is not actually a marjoram but a thyme -- Thymus mastichina. Endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, it grows in the garrigues of Spain and Portugal, where it is called 'tomillo blanco'. Spanish shepherds have used it for centuries as a tea against bronchitis. Its 1,8-cineole was recognized early by Castilian distillers. Spain is the world's leading producer, with an excellent quality-price ratio.
Distinguished from sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana, calming) by a totally different profile: it is rich in 1,8-cineole (50-75%), which brings it closer to eucalyptus radiata than to marjoram. It is a gentle respiratory expectorant and antiseptic, well tolerated and affordably priced.

Wild marjoram is pleasant to use daily in winter. In diffusion, it purifies without being aggressive. Topically, 20-30% on the chest and back. Pairs perfectly with ravintsara and tea tree for antiviral synergies. The 1,8-cineole remains contraindicated in infants and asthmatics.

Spanish marjoram (Thymus mastichina) is actually a thyme, not a true marjoram. Rich in 1,8-cineole (50-70%), it is a good respiratory essential oil. Its common name is misleading.
Yes, its high 1,8-cineole content makes it a good expectorant and respiratory antiseptic. In chest rub or diffusion, similar to eucalyptus radiata but with a more herbal scent. Well tolerated from age 6.
No. Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) is calming and relaxing. Spanish marjoram (Thymus mastichina) is respiratory and stimulating. Completely different profiles despite the shared 'marjoram' name.
