Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, native to the Moluccas (Indonesia). In the Middle Ages, they were worth more than gold -- spice trade routes literally shaped world geopolitics. The Portuguese, then the Dutch, fought for the monopoly on clove trade. In traditional dentistry, cloves have been used for centuries against toothache -- the eugenol they contain is still a component of modern dental cements.
Clove contains 70-85% eugenol, a powerful phenol that is also a local anesthetic. This is why it numbs the gum when chewed -- dentists still use it in purified form. This same power makes it extremely skin-burning: NEVER neat on the skin, and even diluted, its use must remain occasional as it is hepatotoxic with prolonged use.
