Artemisia vulgaris
8-18€ / 10ml

Wormwood is perhaps the most ambivalent plant in Western pharmacopoeia. Its name is a tribute to Artemis, Greek goddess of the moon, hunting and fertility. Since Antiquity, wormwood has been the quintessential emmenagogue plant, used to trigger and regulate menstruation. But this power has a dark side: thujone, the major neurotoxic ketone in its essential oil, makes it one of the most dangerous substances in aromatherapy. In France, the sale of wormwood essential oil is restricted and reserved for professionals.
Wormwood stands out from all other essential oils by the severity of its usage restrictions. In France, it is on the list of restricted essential oils. Its chemical profile, dominated by alpha and beta thujone, makes it a powerful neurotoxin capable of causing convulsions, vertigo, hallucinations and, at high doses, coma. Strictly limit to expert hands for precise indications.
Les propriétés listées reposent sur des études in vitro et/ou un usage traditionnel. Sauf mention contraire, elles n'ont pas été validées par des essais cliniques humains rigoureux. Ces informations ne constituent pas un avis médical.

Its use is exclusively reserved for medical aromatherapists. NEVER in diffusion, NEVER in ingestion without prescription. PROHIBITED in pregnant women (abortifacient), breastfeeding, children, epileptics. For the general public, safe alternatives systematically exist: clary sage (emmenagogue), tea tree (antiparasitic).
Yes, very much so. Rich in alpha-thujone and beta-thujone (neurotoxic, abortifacient). One of the most dangerous essential oils. Strictly reserved for professionals. NEVER use at home. Not to be confused with blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum).
In expert hands, for very specific indications (parasites, amenorrhea) and at precise doses, it can be useful. But the risk/benefit ratio makes it unsuitable for home use. Many safer alternatives exist.
Related but different. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) and wormwood/absinthe (Artemisia absinthium) are both thujone-rich Artemisia species. Both are dangerous. The Artemisia genus contains several toxic species -- always verify the exact species.
